She seeks to avenge his death.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Yoshimine no Yasusada:<\/strong> Munesada\u2019s brother. His death in a political conspiracy becomes the catalyst for the conflict in the latter half of the play.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"p-adBox -normal -border-off\" data-id=\"175\" data-ad=\"normal\"><div class=\"p-adBox__body\"><div class=\"p-adBox__img\"><script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-9605472874778813\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- \u30bf\u30a4\u30c8\u30eb\u3057\u305f -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-9605472874778813\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"9431907817\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\r\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Storyline<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Appearance of Komachi<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>At the snow-covered Ausaka Barrier, a magnificent &#8220;Komachi Cherry Tree&#8221; is in full bloom. <br>As the gatekeeper <strong>Sekibei<\/strong> works nearby, <strong>Ono no Komachi<\/strong> passes by on her way to a temple. <br>Guided by the sound of a <em>koto<\/em> (Japanese harp) played by <strong>Munesada<\/strong>, she finds her heart drawn toward his dwelling. <br>Sekibei stops her, suspicious of a beautiful woman traveling alone, and challenges her with difficult questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong> An Unexpected Reunion<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Munesada<\/strong> appears and realizes the woman is his lover, <strong>Komachi<\/strong>.<br> The two celebrate their unexpected reunion amidst the snow. <br>However, the peaceful mood shifts when a document regarding a lost imperial treasure falls from <strong>Sekibei\u2019s<\/strong> clothes.<br> Munesada and Komachi begin to suspect the gatekeeper is not who he claims to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Omen of the Hawk<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>A hawk flies in, carrying a blood-stained sleeve. <br>On it is written the message <strong>&#8220;Two sons in a boat&#8221;<\/strong> (<em>Niko Jofune<\/em>). <br>This is a secret message from Munesada\u2019s brother, <strong>Yasusada<\/strong>, informing him of his death during the coup in the capital.<br> Suspecting Sekibei is actually the rebel Kuronushi, Munesada sends Komachi back to the capital to investigate further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Night Garden<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Deep in the night, <strong>Sekibei<\/strong> gets drunk on sake. <br>While peering into his cup, he performs a divination using the stars and concludes: <em>&#8220;If I cut down this cherry tree and burn it as a sacred fire, my dark ambition will be realized.&#8221;<\/em> <br>He reveals his true self as <strong>Otomo no Kuronushi<\/strong> and prepares to strike the tree with a massive axe. <br>However, as he swings, a mystical power from the tree causes him to lose strength and faint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Appearance of Sumizome<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>When Sekibei awakens, a beautiful woman named <strong>Sumizome<\/strong> emerges from the trunk of the cherry tree. <br>She claims to be a courtesan in love with him. In reality, she is the <strong>Spirit of the Cherry Tree<\/strong>, seeking revenge on Kuronushi for the death of her lover, Yasusada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Seduction and Revelation<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Sumizome pretends to flirt with Sekibei, teaching him the sophisticated manners of the pleasure quarters. <br>Sekibei plays along, and they engage in a playful &#8220;lovers&#8217; quarrel.&#8221; However, Sumizome catches sight of the blood-stained sleeve in Sekibei\u2019s robe, and her expression turns cold with vengeful intent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Final Transformation (Mi-arawashi)<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Trapped, <strong>Sekibei<\/strong> performs a <strong><em>bukkayeri<\/em><\/strong> (quick costume change), shedding his gatekeeper&#8217;s outfit to reveal his true form as the grand villain <strong>Otomo no Kuronushi<\/strong>. <br><strong>Sumizome<\/strong> also reveals her true nature as the <strong>Cherry Tree Spirit<\/strong>.
